Beton Ciré for Dutch Homes: Uses, Finish and Care
Beton ciré is a thin decorative microcement finish for walls, floors, worktops and built-in furniture. It creates a continuous surface with few visible joints, which suits both modern interiors and renovations where visual calm is important.
What is beton ciré?
The finish is made from a cement-based coating, pigments and a protective sealer. It is applied in several thin layers over a stable, properly prepared substrate. The final colour and texture depend on the product, application method and sealer.
Beton ciré is not poured concrete. Because the decorative layer is thin, the condition of the surface below it matters. Movement, moisture or cracks in the substrate can affect the finished surface.
Where can it be used?
Common applications include bathroom walls, floors, kitchen splashbacks, stairs, fireplace surrounds and custom furniture. A contractor should confirm that the selected system is suitable for the room and substrate.
Bathrooms and wet areas
In a bathroom, the complete system must be designed for wet use. That includes the substrate, waterproofing layer, corners, joints and final sealer. Beton ciré itself should not be treated as a substitute for proper waterproofing.
Floors and stairs
Floors need a strong, level base and a finish specified for foot traffic. Existing tiles may sometimes remain in place, but only after the surface and joints have been assessed and prepared correctly.
Worktops and furniture
A sealed microcement finish can be used on worktops and built-in furniture. Heat, standing water and aggressive cleaning products may damage some systems, so the care instructions supplied with the product remain important.
Appearance and colour
The hand-applied finish has natural tonal variation. Samples help you judge the colour, texture and sheen in the actual room, under both daylight and artificial light. Large areas can look different from a small sample.
Installation
A typical installation includes inspection, cleaning, repairs, priming, reinforcement where required, several finish coats and sealing. Each layer needs enough time to dry. Rushing the preparation or curing stage increases the risk of marks, cracks and poor adhesion.
Cleaning and maintenance
Use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and avoid scouring pads. Water should not be left standing on the surface. Depending on use and the chosen system, the protective sealer may need periodic maintenance or renewal.
Is beton ciré right for your project?
It is a good option when you want a continuous mineral finish and the substrate can be prepared correctly. Before choosing it, compare the expected wear, maintenance, installation time and repair options with alternatives such as tile, natural stone or resin flooring.
